A tiny whitewashed chapel on a rock — one of Santorini’s most iconic and romantic images.

The St. Nicholas Chapel is one of Santorini’s most recognisable and photographed landmarks — a tiny, perfectly whitewashed Greek Orthodox chapel perched on a small rocky islet just off the coast. Surrounded entirely by the deep blue Aegean, it appears to float on the water, its blue-domed bell tower and simple facade creating one of the most quintessentially Greek images you will ever see.
The chapel is dedicated to St. Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors — an especially fitting dedication given the maritime heritage of Santorini. It is a functioning chapel, occasionally used for small ceremonies, and its isolated position gives it an atmosphere of profound calm and spirituality that is difficult to find in the busier parts of the island.
Our catamaran passes close by, giving guests an up-close view of this remarkable little chapel from the water. The reflection of the white walls in the clear sea below, and the contrast with the volcanic cliffs behind, make it a favourite photography stop on every cruise.
